Our head office is in Vancouver, but we have embraced a fully remote work environment so you can work from anywhere in Canada.

We believe work culture is very important, especially at a small company. We get to know every person that joins the wealth management team and connect on a weekly basis. We’ve always got new initiatives on the go and share progress updates as well as issues we face.

You may be all-too-aware of the grid fees your firm charges or you may now accept them as normal, but grid fees are an archaic practice that have been accepted as tradition. Every firm has a different rationale, and they only seem to grow over time - but we don’t believe they should be normal. 

The average advisor has a book of clients with about $14 million AUM (assets under management).

The typical fund will charge 2% - 1% for the fund and 1% for the advisor.

If a firm charges a 50% grid fee (50 basis points), that means the advisor gets the other 50 basis points - $70,000.

The story of how we got here

Ben started as a financial advisor focusing on MFDA products while still in university. He was an entrepreneur at heart and loved that his hard work directly impacted his book. Mutual funds made sense, but when he found out what the endowments for his university were offering, he was confused. He just didn't have the same products to offer his clients.

He searched for a way to get product diversity for his clients and learned about the progression to become a Portfolio Manager. In doing so, he realized the system was not built for Portfolio Managers. There were requirements and rules around becoming a Portfolio Manager that made it harder than it needed to be. 

When he move to the next investment firm for their advertised portfolio manager fast track, they had 1200 advisors and not one portfolio manager to meet the supervisory requirements. He had no guidance at all, but his hard working nature took him to the top. When the firm was acquired, he wasn’t interested in [new rules that made Ben leave] and switched once more. 

It was at the third investment firm that Ben realized these advisor challenges weren’t unique to one firm. They were at every firm he had worked at and each was frustrating in their own way. 

He realized he would have to start his own firm if he wanted a space that didn't have a list of old-school rules holding advisors down. This posed many of its own challenges. 

Fortunately, he came across Peter and Corbin – two entrepreneurs that had come to the exact same conclusion. Together, they had the experience, trading, and compliance background needed to start an investment group.

They imagined a work space that provided the tools and the support to allow advisors to thrive - a firm for advisors, by advisors – and HFI Wealth Management was born.

Where are our offices located?

We are in the process of registering with the Ontario and Quebec securities commission and should have approval/confirmation later this year.
